Breathe for What You Believe In

Breathing - it's something we do every day, never giving it a second thought. But did you know that breath awareness can play a crucial role in your overall health and well-being? By focusing on our breath, we can develop a deeper understanding of our personal values, engage in meaningful self-reflection, and cultivate gratitude. Let's explore how transformative the power of breath awareness is and how it can help us align our lives with our beliefs.

The Power of Breath Awareness

Breath awareness is a conscious practice of observing and regulating the breath. This practice has been utilized in various spiritual and wellness traditions for centuries, such as yoga and mindfulness meditation. By focusing on the natural rhythm of our breath, we can become more present and centered in the moment, allowing us to better understand our thoughts, emotions, and values.

Connecting Breath Awareness to Personal Values

When we engage in breath awareness, we create a space for deep thought and self-discovery. This practice allows us to tap into our inner world and uncover our deepest beliefs and values. By regularly practicing breath awareness, we can gradually develop a stronger sense of self and align our actions with our core principles.

Let's focus on compassion and kindness. By incorporating a breathing practice into your daily routine, you may find it easier to approach difficult situations with empathy and understanding. As you continue to practice, you may notice a greater sense of alignment between your actions and your personal values.

Breath Awareness and Self-Reflection

Breath awareness is a powerful tool for self-reflection, helping us gain insight into our thought patterns, emotions, and behaviors. When we pay attention to our breath, we quiet the mental chatter and create a calm, focused environment internally. As you practice, you may find yourself naturally reflecting on your actions and choices, examining their alignment with your values, and making adjustments as needed. Over time, this continuous process of self-reflection can lead to significant personal growth.

Breath Awareness and Gratitude

Something that breath awareness has really helped me cultivate is a sense of gratitude for the present moment. Engaging in breath awareness, gives us time to express gratitude for our blessings – both big and small. This practice can help us develop a more positive mindset, improve our emotional well-being, and encourage us to appreciate the beauty in everyday life.

Overall, adding a breathing practice into my life, especially in the morning has been a powerful and transformative practice that has helped me connect with my personal values, engage in meaningful self-reflection, and cultivate gratitude. It starts my day off in a positive place and when something does inevitably shift out of alignment, being able to do a quick breathing exercise helps bring me back into a more balanced state.

By incorporating this practice into our daily lives, we can develop a deeper sense of self and align our actions with our beliefs, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and authentic life. So, I invite you to take a deep breath, smile and embrace the journey of self-discovery that lies ahead.

If you need a place to start, some techniques are listed below, and there's a short video to give you something visual to watch to help you on your way.

Belly Breathing

Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.

Place one hand on your chest and the other on your belly.

Inhale slowly through your nose, allowing your belly to rise while keeping your chest still.

Exhale slowly through your mouth, letting your belly fall.

Repeat for 5-10 minutes, focusing on the movement of your belly.

Alternate Nostril Breathing -Nadi Shodhana -

(This one is actually my favorite especially when I need to block out the world for a bit.)

Sit in a comfortable position with your spine as straight and tall as possible.

Close your right nostril with your right thumb and inhale slowly through your left nostril.

Close your left nostril with your right ring finger, and hold your breath for a moment.

Release your right thumb and exhale slowly through your right nostril.

Inhale through your right nostril, close it with your thumb, and hold your breath for a moment.

Release your ring finger and exhale through your left nostril.

This completes one cycle. Repeat for 5-10 cycles.
